Our roadmap for sustainability
Manteco is the leading textile company for sustainability and its roadmap was awarded with the "Radical Green" prize.
Since 1943, sustainability has been the main part of our DNA and we have constantly pursued the objectives of growth and improvement through the search for innovative and responsible solutions, keeping the passion for fabrics unchanged. In this process of awareness, we have issued MantEco for Planet®, our roadmap for sustainability that is in line with the 17 SDGs Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 UN Agenda. In order to strengthen the diffusion of these principles and to make them become key elements for the evaluation of our own work, we have issued a Charter of Values for Sustainability, which daily inspires and drives our employees through the execution of their tasks.
Our Charter of Values for Sustainability
Nr. 1
Policies & Objectives
Our policies and objectives are oriented towards sustainability and adherence to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 UN Agenda. To communicate our environmental and social vision with greater completeness and balance, every year we issue a Sustainability Report following the GRI Standards, reporting all our performance indicators and aiming at constant improvements.
Nr. 2
Traceability & Sustainable Supply Chain
Manteco is committed to spreading and promoting sustainable values and requirements along its entire supply chain. For this purpose, we issued and shared our Charter of Supply Chain Commitments with the entire Manteco System.
Nr. 3
Design & Choice of Sustainable Materials
Manteco intends to evaluate and take into consideration its social and environmental impact. For this reason, we factor in the energy to make our materials, the relative water consumption and the waste produced during the entire life cycle. We favor the choice of regenerated raw materials, following criteria of safeguarding the environment, biodiversity, and respect for animals. To guide our production choices towards sustainable materials and processes, we have adopted a science-based LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) calculation system.
Nr. 4
Control and Monitoring of Chemical Risk
Manteco is aware that the use of chemical products is among the most significant impacts associated with its production activity. In this regard, we undertakes to evaluate our own activities and to minimize the release of chemicals into the environment, keeping the risks associated with their use under control, with the aim of their progressive elimination. Manteco has chosen to adopt the 4sustainability® Chemical Management Protocol for the implementation of the MRSL ZDHC, which will allow the company to monitor and control chemicals at all stages of production.
Nr. 5
Climate Commitment
Manteco is committed to fighting climate change and has therefore defined a path to manage and mitigate its impacts, using an assessment system to monitor production related emissions. The objectives of constantly expanding the monitoring and control of GHG emissions throughout the supply chain and of identifying and implementing solutions to reduce and to compensate these are to be pursued.
Nr. 6
People First
For Manteco, people are the beating heart of the company and, for this reason, we want to ensure the welfare of our people. The starting point is, and remains, a relationship with people based on justice and respect, on values of equality, taking into account the social repercussions of management choices. Along with this, the safety and health of people are pursued in our production. The future is based on quality, sustainability and innovation, therefore we consider it essential to invest in skills with our Manteco Academy, through which we support and train internal and external professionals.
We are a Member of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's Network
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation is an international charity that develops and promotes the circular economy in order to tackle some of the biggest challenges of our time, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution. We work with our network of private and public sector decision-makers, as well as academia, to build capacity, explore collaborative opportunities, and design and develop circular economy initiatives and solutions. Increasingly based on renewable energy, a circular economy is driven by design to eliminate waste, circulate products and materials, and regenerate nature, to create resilience and prosperity for business, the environment, and society.
We are a partner of the Monitor For Circular Fashion
Monitor for Circular Fashion is a multi-stakeholder project involving leading companies in the fashion industry and players in its supply chain. SDA Bocconi’s Sustainability Lab is the project’s scientific partner, while Enel X provides its cross-industry vision to identify circularity KPIs. Monitor for Circular Fashion rallies virtuous businesses and disseminates the best practices of circular fashion, promoting technical, managerial and scientific skills with a view to contributing to the transition towards circular business models.
SOLAR ENERGY
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
This is the reason why our company decided and committed to become a flagship for renewable energy, in every possible way.
One of these is solar energy. Our headquarters and all our warehouses are completely powered by solar panels, thus allowing us to be fully self-sufficient in terms of electricity.
Ultimately, in 2020 our solar power system produced 519’594 kWh of energy, which is a great outcome in terms of renewability.
WATER PURIFICATION
Water purification is the process of removing chemicals, biological contaminants, suspended solids and gases from wastewater, in order for it to be reused.
GIDA SPA was created in 1981 and manages wastewater treatment plants for the industrial aqueduct network of Manteco System.
Through the research and the application of innovative solutions and energy efficiency, the water used in our textile production processes is properly treated, and put back into the industrial system in the most environmental responsible way.
INDUSTRIAL ARCHEOLOGY
A great example of our approach to sustainability, which has run parallel to our constant growth, is the way we proudly preserve our industrial heritage and the environment where Manteco is born, by not building anything on green sites.
All our buildings have been restored rather than being built from scratch, maintaining their historical charm and architecture, never losing their heritage.
SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING
We know that packaging has a big impact on the planet, so when we ship our fabrics, we carefully protect them with packaging made with recycled plastic.
