Designskolen Kolding + Manteco Academy's 2024 MANTECO SUSTAINABILITY AWARD
Laura Juel Hamborg and her "Travel Coat" won the Designskolen Kolding + Manteco Academy's 2024 MANTECO SUSTAINABILITY AWARD
An interpretation of a modern travel coat. Laura was able to use our high-quality recycled wool, to make a beautiful and modern coat for the urban woman.
As Laura has it, “I have taken inspiration from old Danish postal uniforms from the 1950’s and the Copenhagen metro system. I wanted to create an elegant, but practical travel coat. The modern woman has different needs from a coat today. In this project I have tried to incorporate the new needs into the design. For example, the ticket pocket has been placed to the back part of the sleeve. Many modern cities have now a form of check-in card system to their public transportation. Not having to take out a card to check-in, but simply just pressing your sleeve up to the card-reader, is a much more elegant and practical solution.”
The coat is made to last. Design for durability is key to more sustainable living. She has taken conscious decisions in the design to make sure all the weak spots of the coat have been reinforced. The pockets have bar tacks and outer pockets are sewn in a way that is easy to change if needed, and so on. The main sustainability concept lies in the felting. It’s not only ornamental, but also a way for the user to personalise and repair the coat. Because the coat is made of wool, it’s possible to repair small holes and damages by felting. By already having incorporated the details and by delivering a kit for felting, the user will be more inclined to repair and personalise the coat themselves and therefore will be more connected to the coat.
