Alice Ambrosio, Gaia Orso, Benedetta Polello, Gaia Schiavon and Martina Strambi won the first Accademia Italiana + Manteco Academy's MANTECO SUSTAINABILITY AWARD with their project "Menda".
The term “menda”, meaning a flaw or imperfection, serves as a reminder to reflect on self-acceptance. In a world that often strives for perfection, acknowledging and embracing imperfections is essential for our emotional well-being. It is a way of embracing humanity, each mistake or flaw offers a chance for growth and learning. In this light, their “blemishes” are not merely weaknesses but defining traits that make us unique and authentic.
Wabi-sabi is a Japanese aesthetic and philosophical concept that finds beauty in imperfection, incompleteness, and the passage of time. It embraces simplicity and transience as essential aspects of life. The term originates from two words: “wabi”, which signifies a humble, rustic beauty, and “sabi”, which reflects the charm that emerges with time, wear, and aging. At its core, wabi-sabi encourages an appreciation for the imperfect, the unfinished, and the fleeting, highlighting authenticity and a deep connection with nature. It values the transient nature of existence, recognizing that beauty often lies in asymmetry, organic materials, and the natural cycles of life. This philosophy is often reflected in art, design, and architecture, where natural elements and unconventional forms create an atmosphere of harmony and tranquility. Ultimately, wabi-sabi is an invitation to embrace the present, finding joy in simplicity, authenticity, and the beauty of imperfection.
This seasonless women's collection redefines comfort and elegance through a timeless approach that embraces individuality.
It achieves a perfect balance by blending oversized silhouettes, layering, cut-out details, fabric manipulations, and contrasting elements. Crafted from natural materials, the collection features a neutral color palette inspired by earthy tones, soft grays, and deep green hues. Layering plays a central role, encouraging creative styling and experimentation with proportions. Bold cut-out details add a distinctive edge, creating strategic openings that introduce transparency. Fabric manipulations enhance the designs, playing with light and texture while celebrating authenticity. The use of raw, unfinished techniques—such as fraying, tearing, and patchwork—adds depth, embracing the beauty of imperfection and a sense of intentional wear.
The concepts of “wabi-sabi” and “sustainability” are interconnected, as they share a common philosophy.
Wabi-sabi embraces imperfection, natural wear, and the beauty found in the passage of time and unfinished aesthetics. It promotes a minimalist perspective, valuing simplicity and the idea of owning fewer but more meaningful items. This aligns with responsible consumption by encouraging a shift away from short-term purchases in favor of durable, sustainable choices.
