It will be a historic transition, but as Italians we start with a clear advantage, because we have a circular economy champion in-house represented by the historic textile district of Prato, with 2 thousand businesses and over 15 thousand employees. It is the largest hub in Europe and the true economic motor of the territory. Here, a lot has been done in terms of circular economy, with realities par excellence like Comistra and Manteco. These examples demonstrate in an undeniable way that the circular economy is not an ideal, but a reality and a winning model [...]

The sustainability represented at Manteco is the brainchild of a philosophy that extrapolates material from the flow of time. The clock stops, time is used in a non-linear way and materials acquire new life. This approach is clear to see as you walk around the wide-open spaces of the Prato-based company. Looking at the wool emerging from enormous bundles, you understand that a lot of experience has built up since those early days in the ’40s, when the founder collected second-hand military goods from all over Italy and began a recycling process to give them a new life [...]

The never-ending story of recycled wool, according to Manteco. While the fashion industry struggles to find solutions to lower its footprint, an Italian wool recycling enterprise has developed a way to reach a zero-waste system. One enterprise that is improving wool recycling techniques and strategies is Manteco, created in 1943 by Enzo Mantellassi under the name of Lanificio San Marco. The name was changed to Manteco (Mantellassi Compagnia Tessile) in 1983 by Enzo’s son Franco, while the enterprise was starting to gain recognition for the quality and variety of regenerated wool colors that it could offer. Since 2000, the heads of the company are the brothers Matteo and Marco, Enzo’s nephews. Under their direction, in 2014 the enterprise started to apply a zero-waste policy, an extremization of lower-waste policies carried forward by brands in the fashion industry [...]
